Colleen Hoover is nearing the end of the radiation treatment she has quietly undergone following an unspecified cancer diagnosis. In a recent Instagram Story post, the It Ends With Us author shared that she was on her “second to last day of radiation” and told followers she hopes they “never need” to visit the cancer care center she has been attending, though she highly recommends them.
Hoover first shared news of the diagnosis in a private Facebook group, Colleen Hoover’s CoHorts. In December, she wrote to them, “I was in Canada most of the year filming Reminders of Him and had recurring health issues that I continued to put off until the movie was finished. When I returned home, I found out I had cancer.”
In October, Hoover pulled out of a moderating appearance for Lukas Gage’s memoir as well as promotional events for the film adaptation of her book Regretting You. At the time, she said, “I’m super bummed, but am having an unavoidable surgery and can’t travel for a while.” This connects to the procedure she underwent following her diagnosis.
“Mine has since been removed through surgery and I’ll be undergoing some radiation which I will begin soon, but luckily I did not need chemo,” Hoover wrote on Facebook. “So while it felt huge and scary for a bit, and I had to miss ouy on the Regretting You premiere and some other important career and personal moments, I just wasn’t ready to share with anyone until I knew what the outcome would be.”
Last week, in a public Facebook post, Hoover revealed the results she received from a geneticist about the origin of her cancer. “My cancer did not come from family genes,” she said. It also didn’t come from the two main causes of the cancer, which are HPV and excessive hormones. This means it was more than likely environmental/lifestyle, which is lack of exercise, poor diet and stress. I’m happy and grateful to be alive but I hate vegetables. I hate when I have to get off the couch. I hate sweating. I hate when science is right.”
Details about Hoover’s diagnosis come as she celebrates the release of her latest novel, Woman Down, out now. In her December post, she explained she hadn’t yet scheduled a tour for the book because she was undergoing treatment. “I’m not saying I won’t be up to doing at least one signing, but I just won’t know until I know.”
