Culkin, who famously played O’Hara’s savvy son in Home Alone, paid tribute to the late actress
The world is mourning the loss of the legendary Catherine O’Hara, who died on Friday at the age of 71 — and that includes Macaulay Culkin, who famously played her son, Kevin McCallister, in Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
“Mama,” Culkin wrote on Instagram, sharing a photo of them in the 1990 Christmas classic. “I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say.”
“I love you,” he continued. “I’ll see you later.”
O’Hara died in her Los Angeles home. A rep confirmed her death to Rolling Stone, adding that she died after a brief, unspecified illness. Celebrities from Pedro Pascal to Lily Tomlin have also been honoring the late Canadian actress, posting heartfelt tributes online.
In 2024, O’Hara gave a speech at Culkin’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony, in which she recalled seeing Home Alone in a theater after it opened. Two boys had to go to the bathroom, and they were terrified to miss the film. “[They] panicked they might miss something great, they turned around and looked back at the screen and one of them said, ‘It’s OK. It’s just the mom.’”
“Home Alone was, is, and will always be a beloved global sensation,” she added, as Culkin stood next to her, crying. “The reason families all over the world can’t let a year go by without watching and loving Home Alone together is because of Macaulay Culkin.”
