People has named British actor Jonathan Bailey as their “Sexiest Man of the Year.” The news was revealed on The Tonight Show by host Jimmy Fallon, who called out Bailey’s work this year in both Wicked: For Good and Jurassic World Rebirth.
“It’s an honor of a lifetime,” Bailey told Fallon. “And I want to say, Jimmy, thank you so much for turning it down so that I could be here.”
Fallon asked Bailey if it was difficult to keep the news a secret, but Bailey said it was “surprisingly not.”
“Because not that many people are going, ‘Are you…?’” he said. “We’re starting the Wicked press tour and I went away with some friends just before, just to get a bit of pal time. And we went out and we had a few drinks, and I was like, ‘Guys, guys.’ I was like, ‘I’m the sexiest man alive.’ And they were like, ‘Yeah, yeah, do your affirmations.’”
Fallon noted that Bailey is known as “the Internet’s boyfriend.” He told Bailey that fans are always trying to cast him in various roles, including as the next James Bond and the next Batman. “Only if you’re by my side,” Bailey replied. “Will you be my Moneypenny?”
The actor also mentioned Wicked: For Good, which comes out later this month. “It’s like these extraordinary people who are utilizing a lifetime of craft,” Bailey said of the sequel. “And I think it will be one of my greatest honors to support Jon M. Chu. He’s an incredibly visionary director. … It’s going to be emotional for everyone, but it’s going to be a beautiful thing, I think.”
In his People cover story, Bailey shared his first celebrity crush (Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid) and said the last time he was moved to tears was watching Wicked: For Good. “But beyond watching my own work, in a good way I get moved to tears by family quite a lot,” he said. “Like my niece was pupil of the week, and I was just so proud of her. And she’s the eldest of the next gen of Baileys. And that made me well up. In fact, all my sisters, when they send pictures of their kids—I do find family does make me really emotional.”
Wicked: For Good is set to arrive in theaters Nov. 21. It stars Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Bailey plays Prince Fiyero, while Michelle Yeoh is Madame Morrible and Jeff Goldblum is the Wizard. The rest of the cast includes Marissa Bode, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, and Bronwyn James.
